An average adult cat would need somewhere between 115 to 140 grams of wet food per day. These recommended amounts are approximates and will change if the cat is on a mixed food diet. Consult your vet for further feeding recommendations and always refer to the packaging serving guidelines.
An adult cat can be healthy on just wet cat food, however there are benefits to feeding your feline a mixed diet of both wet and dry food. If your situation means you can only offer one type of food, this is also fine.
Most wet cat foods contain up to 70% water, which aids your cat’s hydration and allows them to take on fluids during meal times. It is still essential to keep fresh water available for your cat to drink during the day.
Dry cat food is generally better than wet food for promoting dental health, as the crunching action helps to reduce plaque and tartar build-up on your cat’s teeth. However, wet food can be an excellent choice for cats with dental problems, as it’s softer and easier to chew, making mealtime more comfortable for them.
A combination of both can provide balanced nutrition while supporting dental care.
If you open a tin or pouch of wet cat food but don’t use the entire portion, store the leftover food in the fridge at 4°C (40°F) or lower. Always use within one to two days to keep it fresh and safe. If the food smells off or looks spoiled, it’s best to discard it, as cats can be sensitive to changes in food quality.
People choose to heat up wet cat food in several ways. One is to add a splash of hot water to the meal, which provides a little extra hydration. Another is to remove the food from the tin or pouch, place it on a microwavable plate or bowl, and heat for up to 10 seconds.
Alternatively, you could put the unopened pouch or tin in a bowl of warm water.
Purina, Royal Canin and Hill’s all offer excellent wet cat food recommended by vets for kittens and senior cats. Be sure to check serving recommendations on the food packaging or consult your vet for any queries.
