What is Hypoallergenic Dog Food?

Hypoallergenic dog food, also known as 'anti-allergy dog food', is made using ingredients less likely to trigger an allergic reaction in dogs - done by using a single source, novel and/or hydrolysed protein, usually absent of common allergens such as grains, dairy, beef, chicken, eggs, and soy.

Different Types of Hypoallergenic Protein Sources:

Type Protein Source Examples
Single Source Single Source Protein 1. Hill's Science Diet z/d
2. Purina Pro Plan Veterinary Diets HA
Novel Protein Novel Protein (e.g., Duck, Fish) 1. Calibra Veterinary Diet Ultra-Hypoallergenic Insect Protein
Hydrolysed Protein Hydrolysed Protein 1. Royal Canin Hypoallergenic
2. Dechra SPECIFIC COD-HY Allergen Plus Hypoallergenic

At Pet Drugs Online, we have a range of dry and wet hypoallergenic dog food, with trusted brands such as;

Royal Canin

Royal Canin Hypoallergenic Dog Food is formulated to reduce ingredient and nutrient intolerances, Made with a hydrolysed soya protein isolate, making it less likely to trigger an allergic reaction. The food also contains a single carbohydrate source (rice), and a blend of fibres.

Purina

Purina Hypoallergenic Dog Food is formulated with hydrolysed soy protein, which is easy to digest and less likely to trigger allergic reactions -  this food is an ideal one-stop-shop for dogs with food allergies. Which one is right for your dog?

All options are great for dogs with food allergies and sensitivities including;

  • Skin allergies
  • Food allergies
  • Digestive problems
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Pancreatitis
  • Chronic diarrhoea

The best food for your dog will depend on their individual needs and occasionally needs a trial and error period to find the right food for your dog, so it's important to talk to your veterinarian before making a decision.

What is the difference between Hypoallergenic and Anallergenic Dog Food?

Anallergenic dog food can be a lifesaver for dogs with severe food allergies and itchy skin, helping them to live a more comfortable and healthy life - especially those with allergies to multiple ingredients. Hypoallergenic food has fewer allergens, while Anallergenic dog food has none at all.

We have anallergenic food options for small breeds and larger breeds available. Speak to your veterinarian before purchasing this food.
