What Is Hypoallergenic Cat Food?

Hypoallergenic cat food, also known as 'anti-allergy cat food', is made using ingredients less likely to trigger an allergic reaction in cats. This is achieved by using a single source, novel, and/or hydrolysed protein, usually free of common allergens such as grains, dairy, beef, chicken, eggs, and soy.

Different Types of Hypoallergenic Protein Sources for Cats:

Type Protein Source Examples
Hydrolysed Proteins Proteins broken down into smaller components 1. Hill's Prescription Diet z/d, 2. Royal Canin Hydrolysed Protein
Novel Proteins Proteins less likely to have been previously exposed Duck, Venison, Rabbit, Kangaroo, Quail
Single Animal Protein Sources Diet containing only one type of animal protein Turkey, Lamb, Pork
Plant-Based Proteins Non-animal protein sources Pea Protein, Potato Protein, Soy Protein
Insect-Based Proteins Novel protein source from insects Cricket Protein, Mealworm Protein

Which one is right for your cat?

 All options are great for food allergies and sensitivities including;

  • Skin allergies
  • Food allergies
  • Digestive problems
  • Inflammatory bowel disease
  • Pancreatitis
  • Chronic diarrhoea

The best food will depend on their individual needs and occasionally needs a trial and error period to find the right food for your cat, so it's important to talk to your veterinarian before making a decision.
