What is NexGard Spectra for Dogs?

NexGard Spectra for large dogs is a monthly one-tablet treatment meant to treat and protect your dog from a range of both internal and external parasites. These primarily include:

  • Fleas
  • Ticks
  • Lungworm
  • Roundworm

NexGard Spectra also protects your dog from demodex, sarcoptes, hookworms, whipworm and prevents heartworm.

How Does NexGard Spectra Work?

NexGard Spectra for dogs contain two active ingredients: afoxolaner and milbemycin oxime.

The afoxolaner works by binding to GABA-gated and glutamate-gated chloride channels in insects and their nerve cells. The treatment is then able to attack the parasite's central nervous system, sending them into hyperexcitation which results in uncontrolled activity and death. The milbemycin oxime works in a similar way by disrupting nerve transmissions within the parasite, ultimately leading to their death.

When working together, these two ingredients offer broad-spectrum treatment to protect your dog from both internal and external parasites for a month.

Please note, NexGard Spectra is available in a range of doses based on your pet’s body weight. Always ensure you are purchasing the correct dosage as stated on your prescription, or we won’t be able to send it to you, resulting in delays to your order.

NexGard Spectra is also available in the following dosages:

NexGard Spectra Flea and Worm Treatment for dogs is a prescription medication and will only be sent once a valid prescription is received. If you would like advice on how to send your pet’s prescription to us, please read our prescriptions information page

FAQs:

Q - Can I get NexGard spectra without a vet prescription?

A - No. Nexgard Spectra for dogs can only be purchased with a valid prescription from your vet. Please be wary of anyone offering NexGard Spectra without a veterinary prescription and only buy your pet’s medication from a VMD-accredited retailer.

Q - Is there a difference between NexGard and NexGard Spectra?

A - NexGard will protect your pet from fleas and other external parasites due to its active ingredient afoxolaner. NexGard Spectra, however, also offers your dog protection from internal parasites and intestinal worms such as lungworm and heartworm due to its second active ingredient, milbemycin oxime.

Please ensure you are ordering the correct NexGard product from us as we can only dispense what your prescription states.

Q - What are the side effects of NexGard SPECTRA?

A - Side effects in dogs from taking the NexGard Spectra chew are uncommon, but may include vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, anorexia, and pruritus (itchy skin). These side effects, however, are generally self-limited and last only a short while.

In very rare cases, other side effects reported have included erythema and neurological signs (convulsions, ataxia and muscle tremors). If you believe your dog is having an adverse reaction to the NexGard Spectra Chew, contact your vet immediately for further advice.
