How to Administer Tablets to Pets
Before you begin trying to administer the tablet to your pet, ensure you have fully read and understood the safety information provided with the medication. This should tell you whether or not this medication can be given with food or not.
With Food
If this medication can be administered with food, you can try hiding the pill inside your pet’s favourite treat, just ensure they get the full dose. Some brands even offer pill giver treats such as the Royal Canin Pill Assist to help you administer medication to your pet.
You can also try crushing the pill up and mixing it in with your pet’s ordinary meal. Just be sure to check with your vet beforehand as some medication can be less effective once crushed. If you are mixing the tablet with your pet’s food, ensure they consume the whole dose.
Without Food
If your pet’s medication needs to be administered without food (on an empty stomach), then here is a simple method to help:
Stand your pet on a slip-free surface and tilt their head back towards the ceiling.
Open your pet’s mouth and gently put the pill as far back on your pet’s tongue as you can.
Hold your pet’s mouth closed and gently stroke their throat to encourage swallowing. Make sure your pet has swallowed the full dose before letting them go.
You can also trickle in small amounts of water into your pet’s mouth to help encourage swallowing. Stop if any coughing or gagging occurs.
If it is particularly difficult to administer tablets to your pet, speak with your vet to see if there are any oral suspension options available.
