What conditions does Synulox treat?

Synulox is commonly used to treat bacterial infections in dogs and cats. It is effective against a wide range of bacteria and can be used to treat various conditions, including but not limited to:

  • → Skin and soft tissue infections: Synulox can help with bacterial skin infections, such as pyoderma and abscesses.
  • → Urinary tract infections: It can be used to treat bacterial infections in the urinary tract, including cystitis and pyelonephritis.
  • → Respiratory infections: Synulox can be prescribed for respiratory infections like bronchitis, pneumonia, and sinusitis.
  • → Dental infections: It may be used to treat oral infections, such as gingivitis and abscesses.
  • → Other infections: Synulox may also effectively treat certain gastrointestinal infections, such as enteritis.

What is Synulox for dogs and cats and how does it work?

Synulox contains two active ingredients: amoxicillin and clavulanic acid.

Amoxicillin is a penicillin antibiotic that inhibits the growth of bacteria and interferes with their cell wall synthesis, leading to the death of the bacteria.

Clavulanic acid, on the other hand, is a beta-lactamase inhibitor. It works by blocking an enzyme called beta-lactamase that some bacteria produce. Beta-lactamase can inactivate amoxicillin, making the bacteria resistant to its effects. By inhibiting beta-lactamase, clavulanic acid helps enhance the activity of amoxicillin against these resistant bacteria.

How is Synulox administered?

Synulox is available in tablet form and Synulox palatable drops for dogs and cats. Your veterinarian will provide the dosage and administration instructions based on your pet's weight, condition, and severity of the infection.

Tablets should be administered orally and can be given with or without food. The oral suspension should be shaken well before use and administered using the included syringe or dropper. It's important to follow the specific dosing instructions provided by your veterinarian to ensure the correct and safe administration of the medication.

How long does Synulox take to work?

Synulox's effectiveness varies based on the specific infection being treated and the pet's response. You may see improvement within a few days of starting the treatment. However, it's crucial to complete the entire course of treatment as prescribed by your veterinarian, even if the symptoms improve earlier. Stopping the medication prematurely may allow the bacteria to survive and the infection to reoccur.

Can Synulox be used with other medications?

Synulox can interact with certain medications, so informing your veterinarian about any other medications or supplements your pet is taking is important. They can evaluate potential interactions and adjust the treatment plan accordingly. In particular, avoiding using Synulox with other antibiotics or medications that may interact with amoxicillin or clavulanic acid is essential.

What should I do if my pet experiences side effects from Synulox?

While Synulox is generally well-tolerated, some pets may experience side effects. Common side effects may include gastrointestinal upset, such as;

  • → Vomiting
  • → Diarrhoea

If your pet experiences any unusual or severe side effects, contact your veterinarian.

Is Synuclav the same as Synulox?

Yes, Synuclav is essentially the same medication as Synulox. Although not sold by us in that name, Synuclav is a brand name used in some countries for the combination of amoxicillin and clavulanic acid - the same active ingredient combination found in Synulox.

The specific brand name may vary depending on the country or manufacturer, but the active ingredients and therapeutic effects are the same.

Can I get Synulox Without a Vet Prescription in the UK?

No, Synulox is a prescription medication in the UK and cannot be obtained without a prescription from a veterinarian. For your pet's safety, always be wary of any organisation offering to sell any prescription-only veterinary medicines without a prescription.

Please note, while we have an onsite vet to oversee the sales of prescription medicines, we do not offer veterinary consultations or advice.
