What is Metacam Oral Suspension?
Metacam for dogs is an anti-inflammatory drug for the treatment of pain and inflammation relating to musculo-skeletal disorders including arthritis in dogs and acute (sudden and short-lived) musculoskeletal disorders, such as an injury. Metacam for dogs is commonly used to reduce post-operative pain and inflammation following orthopaedic (e.g. fracture operation) and soft tissue surgery.
Metacam Oral Suspension for Dogs is manufactured by Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health UK Ltd.

How Does Metacam Oral Suspension work?
The active ingredient in Metacam Oral Suspension is Meloxicam which belongs to a class of medicines known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
Meloxicam acts by blocking an enzyme called cyclooxygenase which is involved in the production of prostaglandins. As prostaglandins are substances that trigger inflammation, pain, exudation of fluid (fluid that leaks out of blood vessels during inflammation) and fever, meloxicam reduces these signs of disease.

Administration Instructions:
Metacam Oral Suspension for dogs should be administered orally either by mixing with your dog’s food, or directly into the mouth.
If you are mixing the Metacam Oral Suspension with food, it is recommended you mix the prescribed dosage with a small amount of food and feed it to your pet after a sufficient period of fasting to ensure your pet consumes the entire dosage.
When giving directly into the mouth or on food, use the bottle drop dispenser (for very small dog breeds where the dose is in drops) or use the measuring syringe (attaching it to the drop dispenser on the bottle) and measure the prescribed dosage in kg.
When giving directly into the mouth insert the syringe into your dog’s mouth and deliver the entire dose. Make sure your dog has swallowed the dosage and give them a treat.
Safety Information
Metacam Oral Suspension for dogs should also not be used in:
- Dogs with a known hypersensitivity to meloxicam, other NSAIDs, or any of the other ingredients in Metacam
- Dogs with any bleeding disorders
- Pregnant or lactating dogs
- Dogs suffering from gastrointestinal disorders
- Dogs under six weeks of age
- Dogs on other NSAID medication or glucocorticosteroids.
- In animals other than dogs. There is a different strength available for cats called Metacam 0.5mg/ml Oral Suspension for Cats.
Adverse effects
The typical side effects of other NSAIDs have been occasionally reported when using Metacam. These include:
- Loss of appetite
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Faecal occult blood
- Apathy
- Renal failure
In very rare cases the following adverse effects can be seen.
- Haemorrhagic diarrhoea
- Haematemesis
- Gastrointestinal ulceration
- Elevated liver enzymes
These reactions are noted within the first week of treatment and generally stop once treatment has ceased however in some very rare cases they can be serious or fatal. If you notice your dog having any adverse reactions to Metacam, contact your vet immediately for further advice.

Q - Does Metacam make dogs sleepy?
A - Lethargy is one of the potential side effects for dogs being treated with Metacam, along with vomiting/diarrhoea, eating less and a change in drinking, change in urination habits, skin redness or scratching, lack of coordination, and other behavioural changes such as aggression or depression.
If you see any of these side effects in your dog, stop treatment immediately and contact your vet for further advice.
Q - How long does it take Metacam to work in dogs?
A - Metacam is absorbed quickly once administered and your dog should begin to show signs of pain easing within 3-4 days of beginning regular dosing.
