What is Metacam?

Metacam is a prescription anti-inflammatory medication. It provides pain relief for animals with chronic conditions, such as arthritis. It also helps animals with acute conditions, such as after surgery or any injury. You can buy Metacam online from us at Pet Drugs Online, and it is available as Metacam oral suspension for dogs, cats, guinea pigs and horses or as chewable tablets for dogs.

Please note Metacam products should only be used to treat the specified animal on the prescription.

How Long Does Metacam Take to Work?

The active ingredient in this medicine is Meloxicam, a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Once you've administered Metacam, it works fast to relieve your pet's symptoms within 1-2 hours. For cases of arthritis in dogs or cats, it may take 3–4 days of starting regular treatment to see improvements in your pet's mobility and behaviour.

If you're concerned your pet isn't showing signs of improvement after a week of treatment, speak with your vet for further advice.

How Long Does Metacam Last?

Your vet will advise you on your pet's specific dosage depending on their body weight and other factors. Typically, it is administered once daily, and one dose of Metacam works for up to 24 hours to relieve pain and any other of your pet's related symptoms.

Metacam Side Effects

As with all prescription medicines, there are some possible side effects when treating your pet with Metacam. These will be discussed with you before treatment with your vet and can also be found detailed in the product's datasheet.

These side effects are rare and transient, but you may notice your pet display the following while being treated:

  • - Loss of appetite
  • - Vomiting
  • - Diarrhoea
  • -Blood in faeces
  • - Unusual tiredness

If you are worried about your pet before or during treatment, consult with your vet as soon as possible for further advice.

Does Metacam Make Dogs Sleepy?

One of the common side effects of Metacam is lethargy (lack of energy), so it's normal for your dog to sleep more during treatment. If you are concerned about your dog's behaviour during treatment, consult your vet for more advice.

Can You Buy Metacam for Dogs Without Vet Prescription UK?

All Metacam products are prescription-only medicine that can only be purchased using your vet's valid, in-date prescription. You can learn more about ordering a prescription medicine for your pet from Pet Drugs Online on our pet prescription information page. For your pet's safety, always be wary of any organisation offering to sell Metacam or any other prescription-only veterinary medicines without a prescription.

Please note, while we have an onsite vet to oversee the sales of prescription medicines, we do not offer veterinary consultations or advice.
