What is Meloxidyl Oral Suspension? 

The active ingredient in Meloxidyl Oral Suspension is Meloxicam, making it a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug family (NSAID). 

What is Meloxidyl for dogs used for?

Meloxidyl Oral Suspension is meant for the control of pain and inflammation in dogs associated with chronic musculoskeletal disorders, such as osteoarthritis, in order to improve your dog’s quality of life. 

Meloxidyl may also be used to alleviate inflammation and pain in acute musculoskeletal disorders as well, such as due to an injury.

How to Store Meloxidyl Oral Suspension 

There are no special conditions for the storage of Meloxidyl Oral Suspension for dogs, however, once the medication packaging has been opened, the medication must be used within 6 months. Any medication that has not been used should be appropriately disposed of through your vet or in a suitable Disposal Of Old Pharmaceuticals (DOOP) bin.

Important Safety Information 

Meloxidyl Oral Suspension for dogs is only intended for use in dogs and must not be administered to any other animals, including cats or small animals. There is a separate Meloxidyl Oral Suspension for Cats.

Meloxidyl Oral Suspension for dogs should also not be used in: 

  • Dogs with a known hypersensitivity to meloxicam, other NSAIDs, or any of the other ingredients in Meloxidyl
  • Dogs with any bleeding disorders
  • Pregnant or lactating dogs
  • Dogs suffering from gastrointestinal disorders
  • Dogs under six weeks of age
  • Dogs on other NSAID medication or glucocorticosteroids. 
  • Dogs who are dehydrated, hypovolemic or hypotensive.

Administering Meloxidyl Oral Suspension to Dogs 

Meloxidyl Oral Suspension is intended for oral administration and should ideally be mixed with your dog’s food. 

Shake the bottle and remove the cap. Use the syringe provided to measure out your dog’s dose as stated by their prescription. Mix the oral suspension with a small portion of your dog's normal food and give it to your dog when they are hungry to ensure they consume the whole dose. Give your dog a treat or the rest of their meal once you are sure the full dose has been consumed.

Q - What are the side effects of Meloxidyl in dogs?

A - The typical side effects of other NSAIDs have been occasionally reported when using Meloxidyl. These include: 

  • Loss of appetite
  • Vomiting
  • Diarrhoea
  • Faecal occult blood
  • Apathy

These reactions are noted within the first week of treatment and generally stop once treatment has ceased however in some very rare cases they can be serious or fatal. If you notice your dog having any adverse reactions to Meloxidyl, contact your vet immediately for further advice.  

Q - How long does it take for Meloxidyl to work in dogs?

A - Once the dose has been consumed, Meloxidyl works quickly with effects taking place within 1-2 hours. Studies have shown Meloxidyl to be an effective treatment for reducing pain and have shown improvements in overall mobility as early as 14 days. 

Q - When should I give my dog Meloxidyl?

A - Meloxidyl Oral Suspension should be administered once daily with food. Ideally, you should give your dog the Meloxidyl dose mixed with a small portion of one of your dog’s daily meals when they are hungry to ensure the entire dose has been consumed.
