What is Galliprant?
Galliprant for dogs is used to effectively treat the pain associated with mild to moderate osteoarthritis in dogs.
How Does Galliprant Work?
Galliprant is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug [NSAID] intended for use in dogs only. The active ingredient in Galliprant is Grapiprant, which works by targeting the pain receptors that are associated with osteoarthritis in dogs. This effectively relieves your dog of pain and allows them to keep moving, and maintain a healthy weight without putting any more stress on their joints.
Galliprant is a prescription medication, we are only able to dispense the dosage stated on your prescription. All prescription medication will only be sent once a valid prescription is received. If you would like advice on how to send your pet’s prescription to us, please read our prescriptions information page.
Storing Galliprant
Keep Galliprant in a secure location out of sight and reach of children and pets to avoid accidental ingestion. Do not store Galliprant over 30 °C and any whole or half tablets should be stored in the original bottle. Once opened, Galliprant has a shelf life of three months. After this time, any remaining whole or half tablets should be appropriately disposed of in a Disposal Of Old Pharmaceuticals bin, or by returning to your vet.
Administration Instructions:
Galliprant needs to be administered orally to your dog once a day and is flavoured and chewable for easy administration. Be sure to give your dog Galliprant on an empty stomach at least one house before your dog’s next meal. Wash hands after handling Galliprant.
Galliprant should not be used for dogs with a hypersensitivity to grapiprant, or any dogs that are used for breeding, are pregnant or lactating, or in dogs younger than 9 months or less than 3.6kg in weight as safe use in these animals has not been studied.
Use with caution in dogs suffering from pre-existing liver, cardiovascular or renal dysfunction or from gastrointestinal disease.
Always follow your vet's advice when it comes to administering medication to your dog and read the product information sheet before use.
FAQs:
Q - Does Galliprant have side effects?
A - As with other prescription medications, some side effects have been observed in dogs when treated with Galliprant. The more common side effects include vomiting, soft-formed faeces, diarrhoea and inappetence. These side effects were not long-lasting, but you should contact your vet for guidance if your dog experiences any adverse reactions to the medication.
Q - Is Galliprant the same as Gabapentin?
A - Galliprant and Gabapentin are not the same things. Galliprant is an NSAID which targets the pain receptors associated with arthritis in dogs without inhibiting the homeostatic functions, allowing cell growth and your pet’s natural healing process.
Gabapentin, however, is used to treat neuropathic pain that otherwise doesn’t respond to NSAIDs or in cases where NSAID drugs cannot be given. It is currently not a licenced medication in animals.
When it comes to medication and pain relief for your pet, always follow your vet’s recommendation.
Q - How long does it take for Galliprant to work with dogs?
A - Once ingested, Galliprant works quickly and should take effect within 1-2 hours, and clinical response to the treatment is typically observed within 7 days. If after 14 days there is any sign of improvement, consult your vet.
