What are the signs of worm infection?
If your dog is exhibiting any of the following symptoms it could be a sign that they have worms, if you in any doubt or concerned please seek veterinary advice:
Loss of appetite - Serious worm infections can make dogs feel bloated and put them off their food
Vomiting - some worm outbreaks can cause sickness and it may be possible to see worms in the vomit
Pot belly - this symptom is more likely in puppies
Dull coat - worms cause malnourishment in dogs, taking many nutrients from their host which can result in a dog's fur looking dull and lifeless (although this can be down to fleas or a bad diet)
Scooting - some dogs suffering from tapeworm may 'scoot' along the ground to ease an itchy bottom
Diarrhoea - more common in puppies than older dogs, diarrhoea can be a symptom of worms.
Spotting if your dog has worms can be difficult and in many cases there will be no external signs of a worm infection.
Drontal Plus XL Wormer is a one-off treatment to rid your dog of irritating and harmful worms.

Types of Worms
Tapeworms are commonly caused by your pet swallowing fleas whilst grooming. Fleas can carry the larval stage of tapeworms.
Roundworms are the most common types of worm affecting dogs in the UK. They can also be transmitted to humans (young children especially).
Whipworm eggs can live for years and can be found in food, water, faeces, soil and animal flesh. Dogs are infested with whipworm by ingesting infected matter or via another infected animal.
Hookworms are a serious threat to dogs, especially puppies as they suck blood and cause internal blood loss. Hookworm larvae live in the soil and they can infect your dog by penetrating the skin or via ingestion during grooming.

Some types of worms can product up to 85,000 eggs per day

I've always used Drontal for my dogs as it doesn't cause any tummy upsets. I cannot comment on effectiveness, however, as I've never seen any 'wrigglies' deposited in the poo so either it works very well - or my dogs are worm-free and don't need it!! Think I'll still err on the side of caution though and keep dosing them.
