How Does Cardalis for Dogs Work?

Unlike other heart failure medications for dogs, Cardalis tablets have two active ingredients:  Benazepril Hydrochloride and Spironolactone

Spironolactone blocks the actions of the hormone, aldosterone, which usually causes the kidneys to retain salt and water within the body which has harmful effects on the cardiovascular system. Blocking aldosterone then increases the elimination of salt and water in the urine which, in turn, decreases the overall blood volume and the effort needed for the heart to pump blood, thereby improving its function.

Benazepril is converted to benazeprilat in the body, which is an ‘angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitor’. This is able to lower the production of angiotensin II (a substance that narrows blood vessels), allowing the blood vessels to relax and widen as well as allowing a decrease in salt and water retention. This then allows the blood pressure to drop, reducing the load on the heart.

By combining these two ingredients into one treatment, owners are less likely to see deterioration in health or death due to heart failure than if they were treating their dogs with benazepril alone.
