Active Ingredients in Advocate

The two active ingredients in Advocate flea treatments are Imidacloprid and Moxidectin.

Imidacloprid interferes with certain specific receptors (nicotinergic acetylcholine receptors) in the nervous systems of lice and fleas, which results in their subsequent paralysis and death.

Moxidectin causes paralysis and death of nematodes and heartworms by interfering with the way signals are passed between nerve cells (neurotransmission) in the parasites' nervous system.

Possible Side Effects of Advocate

As with most prescription level medications, there are some potential side effects that may occur when using Advocate to treat fleas and worms. These may include:

  • Temporary itchiness
  • Greasy fur
  • Redness of skin
  • Vomiting (rare)
  • Transient neurological signs (very rare)

(See the product information sheet for further details)

If your pet ingests Advocate by licking the treated spot, then salivation may occur for a short period of time as it tastes bitter. Ingestion or overdose of Advocate may also cause neurological signs (uncoordinated muscle movements such as shaking and unsteadiness), ocular signs, abnormal breathing and/or vomiting. Please consult your vet for advice following any accidental ingestion by your pet.

Administration Instructions:

Your Advocate dosage will arrive as a clear yellow to brownish liquid in a pre-filled pipette in the size specified on your prescription. Each pipette is enough for one treatment and will keep your pet protected from fleas and worms for the next four weeks.

For dogs under 25kg Advocate spot on for dogs needs to be applied by parting the fur and applying the liquid directly to your pet’s skin between the shoulder blades.

Advocate for dogs over 25kg should be applied in 3-4 spots along your dog’s back, starting from their shoulder blades and ending at the base of their tail. Take care to prevent your pet from licking the spots. Try to spread the treatment spots evenly along your dog’s back.

Once the treatment has been applied, avoid stroking them in the treated spot or allowing them to contact certain materials (see product information sheet) until the spot is dry. Wash your hands thoroughly after applying Advocate or after accidentally touching a treated area.

Advocate is not for use in puppies under 7 weeks of age and please consult your vet for use in dogs weighing less than 1kg.

Advocate is not recommended for use in animals intended for breeding or those who are pregnant or lactating.

FAQs:

Q - Do you need a prescription for Advocate spot-on?

A - Yes. In order to purchase Advocate spot-on for dogs or cats, you will need a valid prescription.

Q - How often should I treat my dog for fleas with Advocate?

A - Advocate should be applied monthly as part of your pet’s routine flea and worm treatment.

Q - How much advocate do I give my dog?

A - As Advocate is a prescription medication, it is down to your vet to prescribe the amount you should administer to your pet. However, Advocate dosages are broken down depending on your dog's body weight. These are as follows:

  • Advocate for puppies and small dogs up to 4kg
  • Advocate for medium dogs between 4-10kg
  • Advocate for large dogs between 10-25kg
  • Advocate for extra large dogs between 25-40kg

Q - How much Advocate should you give a dog over 40kg?

A - If your dog is over 40kg, then speak with your vet before applying any flea and worming treatment. They may suggest an appropriate combination of dosages, or recommend a more suitable treatment for your pet.

Q - Can I use Advocate twice in one month?

A - Advocate should only be applied one a month (or every four weeks) to avoid the chances of an overdose. The signs of overdose include:

  • Dilated pupils or little pupillary reflex
  • Abnormal respiration
  • In rare cases, salivation and vomiting may also occur.
