Zylkene
Zylkene is a natural product derived from milk proteins that has been proven to help your cat or dog cope in times of stress and adapt to change. Can be used for short periods or continuously if needed.
Zylkene is a revolutionary new product used to help cats and dogs cope with stress. It is a food supplement made from a protein found in milk (the same molecule that helps babies relax after a milk feed). The active ingredient is a peptide (a protein molecule) which is able to bind temporarily to certain receptors in the brain. This has a calming influence similar in some ways to tranquilliser drugs, but without the side effects associated such as sedation or memory loss. It has been clinically proven to be effective in dogs and cats.
It can be used for the following situations:
- Environmental changes - e.g. new pet, new baby or house move
- Multicat households
- Cattery or kennel stay
- Fireworks
- Home Alone
- Travel
How to use Zylkene
For short term stress e.g travelling, begin Zylkene 24 hours before the journey and give a second dose 1 hour before travelling.
For moderate length stress e.g. kenneling, fireworks, begin Zylkene one or two days before the anticipated stressful situation and continue for the duration of the stress.
Zylkene can help manage long term stress. The initial period of use should be 1 - 2 months, and can be repeated as requried. You do not have to wean of Zylene.
Behaviour modification techniques will also aid the management of stress related problems in dogs and cats.
The average daily intake required 15mg/kg, given once daily. The pet's behaviour should be re-evaluated after a 15-30 day course and the daily intake modified if necessary. Zylkene is palatable and easy to give - open the capsule and mix the powder with food or a treat such as cheese or tuna. The capsule can also be given whole.

5-10kg (11-22lbs)- 2 capsules a day
Zylkene 225mg
10-20kg (22-44lb)- 1 capsule daily
Zylkene 450mg
20-40kg (44lb-88lb)- 1 capsule daily
over 40kg (88lbs)- 2 capsules daily
No side effects have been associated with the use of Zylkene and it can be given with other products. Zylkene is hypoallergenic, preservative free and lactose free. Zylkene is non-chemically manufactured to human pharmaceutical standards (GMP)Zylkene can help many dogs and cats cope with difficult situations such as fireworks, however there are some pets that have serious phobias and may need prescription medications. Even the slightest noise causes hugh amounts of stress and an extreme reaction in these animals- some even hurt themselves. If this sounds like your pet, then make an appointment with your vet to discuss management- sometimes referral to a behaviourist is needed.
