LATEST PRESCRIPTION UPDATE

05/06/2008 16:37:15

Veterinary Associations have called on veterinary practitioners to show restraint in October when the free prescription regulations are to be lifted. They agree that veterinary surgeons should charge for their time in writing a prescription but insist that they do this sensibly and charge a transparent fee. The veterinary profession has an opportunity to show how responsible it can be. There will be another review down the line and if individual vets charge too highly they could end up losing the right to charge and will damage the professions credibility. Vets are being offered guidence by governing bodies as to what a prescription fee is and how to work out what a sensible fee should be. They should not be seen to be taking a monopoly over the market as this could also result in fees being banned permanently.

Increasing Veterinary Prices

23/05/2008 18:56:47

It has been revealed that veterinary prices are rising at an average of 12% a year. Is it any surprise then that people are looking for alternative sources for their beloved pets medications? Current legislation states that your veterinary surgery must have a notice on display advertising that prescriptions can be provided and they are legally required to then provide that prescription free of charge should you request one. This will be in review in October but up until that date your veterinary surgery will be breaking the law if they charge anything extra for the prescription.

15/05/2008 12:06:42

There is an online petition (http://petitions.pm.gov.uk/petprescription)urging the Prime Minister to make the ban on charging for veterinary medicines a permanent fixture. In October this will be under review and vets could charge up to a maximum of £15 for a prescription.
